Comment on the system

During 2007 a new classification system for Hotels and Guesthouses was introduced in Ireland. In some instances the criteria are similar to the previous system. Hotels continue to be graded using a star classification system from 1 Star to 5 Star and Guesthouses from 1 Star to 4 Star.

However, the new system will be mandatory for all hotels and guesthouses from January 2008. In each category with the exception of 5 Star hotels there are compulsory criteria which must be in place to achieve that grade and the premises also has the option to score a number of points from a menu of optional facilities and services. These points will actually be shown as a percentage eg., Hotel 4 Star 78%. This means that the hotel has met all the criteria for 4 star and have achieved 78% of the optional criteria available. At 5 Star hotel status all criteria are compulsory to have in place.

From the consumers point of view the new system offers them a highly transparent, objective and very modern classification system.

The operator initially completes an assessment form for their particular classification. This is then verified by an external contractor following a visit to the premises and only then can a classification be awarded.

Failte Ireland is the body responsible for ensuring that accommodation standards are maintained and for the classification of all hotels and guesthouses in Ireland. They currently contract this function out to a company called Tourist Accommodation Management Services Ltd (TAMS). This is the company responsible for on site inspections.
